The Xu Family Residence at Leyi Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou City.

The Xu Family Residence at Leyi Hall

Located at No. 42 Wuqiao Lane in the urban area, it was the residence of the Xu family, and the hall is named “Leyi” (meaning “delight in the virtuous”). Facing south and built on a north-south axis, the structure features a flush gable roof and a brick-and-timber construction. Currently, three courtyards remain, among which the central hall of the second courtyard is a Ming Dynasty building, while the first and third courtyards are Qing Dynasty structures, covering a total area of approximately 350 square meters. The first courtyard is a single-story building with three bays and seven rafters, with a total width of 11.3 meters and a total depth of 7.8 meters. The central hall of the second courtyard has three bays and seven rafters, with a total width of 12.3 meters and a total depth of 7.2 meters. The third courtyard is a two-story small building, also with three bays and seven rafters, spanning a total width of 10.4 meters and a depth of 8.2 meters. The front is equipped with an eaves corridor and a flip-roofed veranda. In terms of layout, the third courtyard, together with the side chambers on both sides and the second courtyard, forms a courtyard-style (siheyuan) structure. It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Changshu City in June 2004.
