Former Residence of Yang Yisun

The former residence of Yang Yisun is located at No. 29–39 Zijin Street in the urban area. It is a Qing Dynasty building, facing south with a north orientation, featuring a brick-and-wood structure and a flush gable roof. In terms of layout, No. 29 and No. 39 stand side by side from east to west as two separate sections, both retaining two courtyards. The first courtyard consists of a single-story section, while the second courtyard includes a two-story small building along with two-story wing rooms on both sides, forming a courtyard-style structure. No. 37 currently retains one courtyard, situated between No. 29 and No. 39. The existing building covers an area of approximately 1,200 square meters and is generally well preserved. Yang Yisun (1813–1881), styled Yongchun, also known as Ziyu and later referred to himself as Haosou in his later years, was a native of Changshu. He passed the imperial examination as a Juren in the 23rd year of the Daoguang reign (1843) during the Qing Dynasty, and served as the Prefect of Fengyang in Anhui. He was skilled in calligraphy, with a particular passion for “seal and official script studies,” and is recognized as an accomplished calligrapher of the Qing Dynasty. It was designated as a municipal cultural relics protection unit of Changshu in June 2009.
