Cliff Inscriptions on the Eastern Foot of Yushan Mountain

The cliff inscriptions on the eastern foot of Yushan Mountain consist of those at Xiaosantai, Shimei, and Shutai Park. At Xiaosantai, there is the “Chuping Stone” and several stone inscriptions by local residents from that time. At Shimei, there is the regular-script inscription “The Mountains Shine and the Rivers Gleam” by the local resident Yan Rusi in the 59th year of the Kangxi reign (1720); the two characters “Meng Quan” (Hidden Spring) written by Cheng Guangju, the grain storage intendant of Suzhou, Songjiang, and Changzhou during the 11th year of the Qianlong reign (1746), as well as the running-script “Pine, Wind, Water, and Moon” by Yan Rusi; the “Stone Pavilion Inscription”; the “Five Blessings Stone”; and on a large rock slightly further ahead, facing west, are the regular-script characters “Shi Ke” (Just Right) and the smaller running-script characters “Arrived Last Night,” both inscribed by the modern bibliophile Qu Qiajia. On the eastern stone cave are engraved the two large regular-script characters “Lei Bi” (Craggy Wall) and the two small characters “Le Hu” (Joyful, Isn’t It?); on the mountain wall of Shimei Garden are engraved the clerical-script characters “Shi Mou” by Gu Wenyao of Xishan. Juya Pavilion is situated among the cliff inscriptions on the eastern foot of Yushan Mountain. This pavilion was built by Yang Ziqi, the magistrate of Changshu, during the Hongzhi era of the Ming Dynasty. It faces south, has a square floor plan measuring 3.45 meters on each side, and is about 5 meters tall, with a hip-and-gable roof. In the 19th year of the Jiaqing reign (1814), it was rebuilt by the local resident Jiang Yinpei, and in 1985, it was reconstructed again on its original site. This group of cliff inscriptions was designated as a municipal cultural heritage site on November 17, 1982.
