The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders is located in Jiangdongmen, Nanjing, China. This site was where the Japanese invaders carried out a massacre and where the remains of the victims were buried in mass graves. To mourn the victims, the Nanjing Municipal Government built the memorial hall in 1985, which was later expanded twice between 1994–1995 and 2005–2007. The site now covers an area of approximately 74,000 square meters, with a building area of 25,000 square meters.

The new building of the memorial hall resembles a massive "Ship of Peace": the towering bow on the eastern side houses richly exhibited galleries, while the solemn surrounding square can accommodate tens of thousands of visitors; the central section is the original site memorial area; the western part features a vast, tree-lined Peace Park; additionally, more than ten vivid and deeply symbolic sculptures are scattered throughout. The entire complex is divided into four functional areas: the exhibition area, the site memorial area, the peace park area, and the collection and exchange area. It serves as a commemorative, site-based historical museum, as well as a national patriotic education base and a national cultural heritage protection unit.

With widespread publicity about the massacre, the hall’s influence has grown both domestically and internationally. Many visitors from around the world come here to pay their respects. They commonly suggest that, just as Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Japan—both recognized as World Cultural Heritage Sites—are preserved, the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, as one of the three greatest tragedies of World War II, should also be planned and developed according to the standards of World Cultural Heritage. Members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), as well as those from Jiangsu Province and Nanjing City, have repeatedly submitted proposals during CPPCC sessions at all levels, calling for the hall’s development to be planned and constructed on the scale of a World Cultural Heritage site.
