ChenGuang 1865 Science and Technology Creative Industry Park

Nanjing 1865 Creative Park is located in the ChenGuang Group area by the Qinhuai River in the southeastern part of Nanjing. It was formerly the Jinling Machinery Manufacturing Bureau during the Self-Strengthening Movement of the Qing Dynasty and is known as the “cradle of China’s national military industry.” In 1865, after the failure of the Taiping Rebellion, Viceroy of Liangjiang Li Hongzhang relocated to Jinling.

To strengthen national power and build up a formidable military with superior weaponry, huge sums of silver were invested to relocate the Suzhou Foreign Gun Factory to Nanjing. Land was acquired by demolishing civilian houses in the area around Saozi Lane in the southern part of the city, where dozens of factory buildings were constructed, including the Main Machinery Plant, Left Plant, Right Plant, Brass Foundry, and the Large Carpentry Workshop. Thus, the Jinling Machinery Manufacturing Bureau was established. All the architecture here carries a strong “arsenal” character.
