Site of the Former Jianghan Guild Hall

The site of the former Jianghan Guild Hall is a protected cultural heritage site of Nanjing.

The Jianghan Guild Hall, also known as the Jianghan Guild House, is located on Luosiqiao Street, Shangxihé, Jianye District, Nanjing. Originally consisting of four courtyards, two remain today, and it is now a protected cultural heritage site of Nanjing.

The Jianghan Guild Hall was built by merchants from Wuhan, Hubei during the late Qing Dynasty. As Shangxihé is situated on the southern bank of the Yangtze River’s branch, many docks were set up along the river, attracting a large number of timber merchants who gathered there for trade. The guild hall served as an important hub for these timber merchants at the time.

The Jianghan Guild Hall is a late Qing Dynasty structure built by merchants from Wuhan, Hubei. Due to Shangxihé’s location on the southern bank of the Yangtze River’s branch—with many docks established along the river—numerous timber merchants gathered here for trade. The guild hall functioned as a key venue for these timber merchants at the time.

The guild hall is a brick-and-timber structure featuring two courtyards with side wings, and its main entrance is on the west side, covering an area of 500 square meters. Although several rooms on the east side are dilapidated in appearance with collapsed roofs, the beams and columns inside are exquisitely crafted and well-preserved. With the original-site expansion of Shangxihé Middle School, the Jianghan Guild Hall building was relocated in its entirety to the west, near the central square of Nanjing Shangxihé Middle School, for restorative preservation. It is planned to be developed into an exhibition hall for the school.
