Lushuiwan National Urban Wetland Park in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, is primarily located in Jiangpu Subdistrict. It borders the Yangtze River to the southeast, stretching from Nanjing's Third Yangtze River Bridge upstream to the Seventh Ring Road Cross-River Tunnel downstream. The planned area of Lushuiwan spans both sides of the Yangtze River dike, covering a total area of approximately 15 square kilometers. The region is mainly characterized by wetland landforms, including two major types of wetlands: freshwater wetlands such as rivers and marshes, as well as artificial wetlands for freshwater aquaculture, agricultural wetlands, and water storage areas.

The area is situated in the northern part of the subtropical zone, enjoying a mild climate, abundant rainfall, and distinct seasons. Its complex and diverse topography features various types of wetlands, which are highly conducive to the growth of diverse animal species. There is an abundance of native aquatic and wetland flora and fauna, including large areas of aquatic forests, reeds, and numerous bird species. Plant life includes both cultivated and native wild plants. Cultivated species comprise rice, soybeans, corn, lotus roots, water bamboo, as well as a variety of vegetables, fruits, and crops, along with trees such as mulberry, willow, poplar, and persimmon. Wild plants include aquatic herbs like water peanut, artemisia selengensis, bulrush, water caltrop, and cocklebur, as well as trees such as paper mulberry, Chinese tallow, and Chinese scholartree. The animal resources are rich in various insects, birds, and farmed fish and crabs. Common insect species include ladybugs, grasshoppers, butterflies, and dragonflies, while bird species include herons, ducks, turtle doves, and brown shrikes.

Lushuiwan belongs to the natural geographical region of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Plain. Located along the Yangtze River, it was formed by silt deposition from the river. Geologically, it mainly consists of alluvial deposits with soft and fertile soil. The lower reaches of Lushuiwan receive inflow from the Chengnan River into the Yangtze, with localized influence from its waters. The planned area features widespread distribution of water bodies and marshes, with water surfaces accounting for nearly 70% of the total area during the summer inflow period. The Lushuiwan region is divided into two parts by the Yangtze River dike. The inner dike area has flat terrain, with interconnected channels and ponds, and water levels typically maintained at 5 to 6 meters. It covers an area of 22,500 mu (including a section of Binjiang Avenue), predominantly consisting of rice fields and vegetable plots, with many lotus ponds and fish farms. The ground elevation generally ranges between 6 to 7 meters. The outer dike area is mainly divided into three parts: the environment enclosed by the dike and the outer embankment, the Lushuiwan water area, and the riverine islet on the eastern side.

The Yangtze River dike of Lushuiwan offers a high vantage point with expansive views. To the east lies the vast expanse of the Yangtze River, while to the west one can gaze over the crisscrossing fields. At dawn, visitors can admire the spectacular sight of the sun rising from the city of Nanjing, and at dusk, they can experience the poetic ambiance of “dark mountains like the sea, and the setting sun like a painting.”
