Memorial to Anti-Japanese Martyrs Who Suffered in the Pukou POW Camp of the Japanese Invaders [Maliu Neighborhood Committee, Taishan Subdistrict Office, Pukou District, Xinhua Street, Shunhe Li, Xin Tan Chang · 1988 · District-level Cultural Relics Protection Unit] At the end of 1940, the Japanese invaders occupying China seized a British-operated egg processing plant by the river in Pukou and converted it into the Pukou POW Camp. The camp covered nearly 3 million square meters, surrounded by water on three sides with one exit. Inside the camp, the Japanese built a coal wharf on the Yangtze River and forced the imprisoned Chinese prisoners of war to perform hard labor. Due to the brutal treatment by the Japanese army, countless prisoners were killed or injured, and they organized four escape attempts. In 1988, the Pukou District People's Government built a memorial on the site of the former POW camp to commemorate the martyrs who died in the anti-Japanese struggle. The memorial covers an area of 100 square meters, with a 2.5-meter-high main body and a 2-meter-square base. The front of the monument is inscribed with “Memorial to Anti-Japanese Martyrs Who Suffered,” and the back features an inscription. In 2005, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance, the district government funded the renovation of the memorial’s surroundings and held commemorative activities there. In 1998, it was designated as a district-level cultural relics protection unit.
