Pukou Chenghuang Temple [No. 52 Dianjiangtai Road, Taishan Subdistrict, Pukou District, within the campus of the PLA-Navy Dual-Use Talent School     Ming Dynasty     Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit] Pukou Chenghuang Temple was first built in the ninth year of the Hongwu reign during the early Ming Dynasty (1376), the time when Jiangpu County was established within Pukou City. It enshrines the City God and is an official temple for worship. Later, the county seat was relocated to what is now Jiangpu Subdistrict due to flooding, and a new Chenghuang Temple was built there. The original temple was then renamed “Yuxu Guan.” Although Yuxu Guan became a Taoist site, the Chenghuang (City God) was still enshrined in the front hall. At that time, the military and logistics institutions stationed in Pukou City included the “Five Guards and Three Granaries,” and officials of various ranks continued to conduct regular worship ceremonies here annually. Despite being renamed Yuxu Guan and primarily functioning as a Taoist site, it has been commonly referred to as Chenghuang Temple by people both in ancient and modern times because it still enshrines the City God. Moreover, during the annual temple fair on the 28th day of the third lunar month at Taishan Temple, the effigy of the Chenghuang Lord is paraded through the streets. In the first year of the Longqing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1567), Wang Zhigang, the magistrate of Jiangpu, founded ten literary societies, with the “Yuxu Society” being established here, turning the site into a gathering place for scholars and literati. In the fortieth year of the Wanli reign (1612), the scholar Shen Ziming founded the “Jianggan Academy” here, making it an educational venue as well. During the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, Pukou Chenghuang Temple was destroyed in the warfare between the Taiping Rebellion forces and the Qing army. After the war, in the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign (1867), Liang Baotian, the commander of the Pukou garrison, advocated for the reconstruction of the Chenghuang Temple, and in the ninth year of the Guangxu reign (1883), Commander Xu Zheng? also supported its rebuilding. However, after several years, the region experienced turmoil again. By 1949, only the central hall, side halls, lotus release pond, small bridge in front of the temple, and stone drums remained. Today, only the central hall and the side halls still stand. The central hall of the Chenghuang Temple is supported by over twenty round wooden pillars. The interior features exquisitely painted beams and carved rafters. The front has a domed ceiling, while the roof is adorned with upturned eaves and densely laid small tiles in a connected roofing style. In 1983, it was designated as a district-level cultural relics protection unit, and in 2006, it was listed as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.

Taishan Subdistrict: Located at the northern end of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, Taishan Subdistrict faces the main urban area of Nanjing across the river and is connected by the bridge. It serves as the northern gateway of the Jiangbei area, covering an area of 45 square kilometers, with a permanent population of over 100,000 and a floating population of more than 50,000. It governs 14 communities.

Since the establishment of the new Pukou District, Taishan Subdistrict has actively integrated into the development strategies of the riverfront area and Nanjing’s cross-river expansion. Focusing on urbanization, it implemented large-scale relocation efforts. Starting from 2003, over six years, it completed the relocation of 20,000 households, covering an area of 2.6 million square meters, and all 50,000 agricultural residents were resettled and transitioned to urban residents.
