Maotang Bridge

Maotang Bridge is a cultural relics protection unit of Nanjing.

Maotang Bridge [located at 13.6 km along Puhetong Road in Yongning Town, Pukou District  ·  Ming Dynasty  ·  Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit] Maotang Bridge is now known as "Maodan Bridge." "Maotang Bridge is thirty li north of the county seat. It was built in the third year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1370), with a width of 5 zhang, brick arches, five arches, spanning the Hou River (one of the tributaries of the Chu River), as an important post road; it was repeatedly destroyed by floods and was rebuilt by Magistrate Liu Ying. In the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1867), Prefect Tu Zongying ordered Acting Magistrate Liao Lun to supervise its repair. In the eleventh year of Tongzhi, Patrol Intendant Sun Yiyen carried out further repairs" (Jiangpu Picheng). During the Liberation War, when Kuomintang forces retreated eastward, they blew up one of the bridge's spans. It was repaired with wooden structures in 1952. In December 1967, after approval by the Provincial Communications Department Engineering Bureau, the Yangzhou Bridge Engineering Team restored the bridge according to its original design, preserving its traditional ancient appearance. The bridge generally faces north-south. To its west, there is a stream intersecting with the main river in a T-shape. Due to flood prevention needs, a dam has now been built on the west side of the bridge, integrating with the structure, and most of the bridge’s openings have been filled in. The bridge currently measures 74.6 meters in length and 13 meters in width, with the central span having a clear opening of 9 meters and an arch height of 5 meters. Puhetong Road is a major transport artery from Nanjing to eastern Anhui, and this centuries-old bridge still carries traffic of vehicles traveling in all directions. It was listed as a county-level cultural relics protection unit in 1983 and a municipal-level one in 2006.

Yongning Subdistrict: Yongning Subdistrict is located at the northern foot of Laoshan Mountain, in the heartland of the Chu River, bordering Nanjing High-Tech Zone to the east and Anhui’s Chuzhou to the north. It governs 18 village (residential) committees and 180 villager groups, covering a total area of 115.5 square kilometers with a population of 46,000.

The area enjoys convenient transportation, with National Highway 104 and the Ning-Cuo Provincial Road passing through, and the Ning-Huai Expressway soon to be completed and opened to traffic. There are two railways, the Ningqi and the Jinpu, and construction of the Ningxi Railway is about to begin.
