Zhongshan Mausoleum Xingjian Pavilion
Xingjian Pavilion is located in the southwestern part of the Zhongshan Mausoleum, at the junction of the Zhongshan Mausoleum Scenic Avenue and the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. It was completed in the summer of 1933, donated by the Guangzhou Municipal Government, designed by renowned architect Zhao Shen, and constructed by the Wang Jingji Construction Firm.
The name “Xingjian” is derived from a line in The Doctrine of the Mean: “As Heaven maintains vigor through movement, a gentleman should constantly strive for self-improvement.” The pavilion has a square floor plan, with each side approximately 9.33 meters long and a height of 12 meters. It features a double-eaved pyramidal roof, with a wooden structure and blue-glazed tiles covering the roof. The interior floor is paved with cement square tiles. Each corner of the pavilion is supported by four pillars, totaling 16 pillars at the four corners, all painted red. The beams and columns are designed to resemble wood. The beams, columns, and upper window grilles are all made of reinforced concrete, with painted surfaces. The painted decorations on the Xingjian Pavilion are exquisitely detailed, vibrant, and were considered the most elaborate among the buildings in the Zhongshan Mausoleum complex at the time. The surrounding area inside the pavilion is fitted with textured cement railings where visitors can sit and rest.
In 1975, during a renovation project, the entire structure was reconstructed using reinforced concrete while retaining its original appearance. However, the newly created paintings no longer retained the charm of the original designs.
