Jiangning Weaving Museum

The Jiangning Weaving Museum is located at No. 123 Changjiang Road, Nanjing. In 2009, after three years of construction and an investment of over 700 million yuan, the reconstruction project of the Jiangning Weaving Mansion, designed by Wu Liangyong, was completed and named the Jiangning Weaving Museum. On February 7, 2013, the Jiangning Weaving Mansion in Nanjing was opened to the public. The reopened Jiangning Weaving Museum consists of four exhibition areas: the Jiangning Weaving Historical Materials Exhibition, the Red Chamber Literature Museum, the Chinese Yunjin Exhibition, and the Chinese Cheongsam Museum.

The Jiangning Weaving Museum covers a land area of 18,700 square meters and a building area of 35,600 square meters, with four above-ground floors featuring garden structures such as the West Pond, Lian Pavilion, Xuanruitang Hall, and Youfenglaiyi. The two underground floors house the Jiangning Weaving Mansion, the Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall, the Red Chamber Literature Historical Materials Hall, and the Yunjin Hall. The overall architectural style of the museum reflects the aesthetics of a traditional Jiangnan garden. Viewed from south to north, the buildings rise layer upon layer like a landscape painting. Inside the mansion, no modern high-rises can be seen to the north, east, or west.

When viewed from the outside, the Jiangning Weaving Museum resembles a modern museum, but between its glass curtain walls, the eaves of two ancient-style pavilions extend outward. Stepping inside, the south side features an elegant Jiangnan-style garden, while the north side presents a grand multi-story structure. The northern part of the garden within the museum consists of four tiers of pavilions and towers that block out surrounding buildings, leaving no trace of modern urban architecture. The museum grounds include small bridges over flowing water and corridors with pavilions by the water. Looking northward from the garden on the south side of the museum, one can see four tiers of halls and terraces on the western buildings, interspersed with four representative structures: “Lian Pavilion,” “Xuanruitang Hall,” “Theater Stage,” and “Youfenglaiyi Hall.” The tallest building is the “Lian Pavilion” in the northwest corner, which serves as the iconic structure of the entire “Jiangning Weaving Mansion.” Located at the highest point of the complex, it stands over 20 meters tall.
