Jiangsu Art Museum is a museum of plastic arts with multiple functions including collecting, researching, exhibiting fine artworks and related materials, providing aesthetic education to the public, and conducting international cultural exchanges. The museum’s collection mainly consists of modern and contemporary artworks, along with pieces from different eras and regions both in China and abroad. The collection focuses on acquiring works by key artists of the “New Jinling School.” The museum currently houses nearly ten thousand pieces in total, with an especially rich collection of Chinese paintings. These include works from the Wu School of the Ming Dynasty, the Four Wangs of the early Qing Dynasty, the Eight Masters of Jinling, the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, the Shanghai School, the New Jinling School, as well as works by various renowned 20th-century artists. In addition, it also holds a large number of prints, Chinese oil paintings, Chinese watercolors, contemporary calligraphy, and folk art. Jiangsu Art Museum is located on Changjiang Road in Nanjing and consists of both the old and new buildings.

The old building was constructed in 1936 as China’s first national-level art museum, with a construction area of 7,000 square meters and an exhibition area of 2,400 square meters. It includes three large exhibition halls, each measuring 550 square meters with 160 meters of display space, and four small exhibition halls, each 170 square meters with 35 meters of display space. The height of all display areas is 3.3 meters.

The new building began construction in 2008 with a total investment of nearly 400 million RMB. It covers a land area of 10,600 square meters, has a construction area of nearly 30,000 square meters, and consists of two underground levels and four above-ground floors, reaching a height of 24 meters. It was designed by the German architectural firm KSP. The new building houses seven exhibition halls of varying sizes, including two large halls each covering 1,300 square meters with 6.5-meter-high display walls. There are also three cabinet-style exhibition halls, two digital exhibition halls, four climate-controlled storage rooms, and one multi-functional academic lecture hall. The newly built museum meets international standards and reflects contemporary features. Its functional layout, equipment configuration, and architectural design all meet top-tier standards. It serves as a significant venue for art collection, research, and exhibition in Jiangsu and even across the nation, as well as a hub for art information dissemination and international cultural exchange.
