Attraction Introduction

The Nanjing Museum of the Six Dynasties is located on the eastern side of Nanjing, at the intersection of Changjiang Road and Hanfu Street. The museum occupies floors B1 to 3 on the eastern and northern sides. During the Six Dynasties period, Nanjing was the world’s first city to have a population exceeding one million and was known alongside ancient Rome as one of the “two great centers of classical civilization.”

Rammed Earth Wall Ruins of the Six Dynasties

On the museum’s B1 level lies a 25-meter-long and 10-meter-wide section of rammed earth wall ruins from the Six Dynasties — the very foundation of the entire museum. In 2008, during excavation work on the site, archaeologists discovered this rammed earth wall buried two meters underground. Research confirmed it as part of the architectural ruins of the Jiankang Palace City, capital of the Six Dynasties, dating back 1,700 years. It was the unearthing of this millennia-old site that led to the creation of today’s Museum of the Six Dynasties.

"Timeless Charm"

The core theme of the Museum of the Six Dynasties’ exhibitions is to showcase the splendor of an “Eastern Metropolis,” featuring four major exhibitions: “Capital of the Six Dynasties,” “Timeless Charm,” “Elegance of the Six Dynasties,” and “Notable Figures of the Six Dynasties.” The first floor also hosts a special exhibition titled “Timeless Charm – Tales of the Three Kingdoms Figures,” which gathers over 60 sets of artifacts related to Three Kingdoms stories from six museums including the Nanjing Museum, Suzhou Museum, and Zhenjiang Museum. The exhibits include calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, clay sculptures, shadow puppets, and wood carvings.

"Elegance of the Six Dynasties"

On the second floor, the “Elegance of the Six Dynasties” exhibition hall displays a large number of precious cultural relics from the Six Dynasties period, such as pottery figurines, celadon ware, epitaphs, roof tiles, and stone carvings. Among them are gracefully dancing male and female pottery figurines, and the roof tiles decorated with patterns resembling smiling faces add a delightful touch.
