Attraction Introduction

Southeast University is a national key university and one of China's famous "Old Eight Architectural Schools" and original "Four Major Engineering Institutes." Visitors primarily come to explore the Sipailou Campus, where the buildings mainly feature European Renaissance architecture and have served as backdrops for numerous film and television productions.

Highlights

The European Renaissance-style Grand Auditorium and the green fountain—Springs Pool—at Southeast University were filming locations for the movie "So Young." The scene where new students arrive on campus was shot here. The Grand Auditorium’s iconic dome is instantly recognizable to most Nanjing residents. Strolling along the tree-lined paths of Southeast University, you can also see other historic buildings such as the library, structural laboratory, craft practice workshop, and Mei’an Hall. In the northwest corner of the campus, south of Mei’an Hall, there is a "Six Dynasties Pine" believed to be over 1,500 years old, planted during the Six Dynasties period.

Historical Background

Southeast University is one of the earliest higher education institutions established in China. Its predecessor was the Sanjiang Normal School, founded in 1902. In 1921, through the strong advocacy of the eminent educator Guo Bingwen, the National Southeast University was officially established on the foundation of the Nanjing Higher Normal School, becoming one of only two national comprehensive universities at the time. It was once praised as "Peking University for its fame in literature, history, and philosophy, and Southeast University for its prestige in science." In 1928, the school was renamed National Central University. In May 1988, it was renamed Southeast University.
