Nanjing Agricultural University is situated in Nanjing, a city celebrated for its beautiful scenery and strategic importance. It is a national key university directly administered by the Ministry of Education, with a focus on agriculture and life sciences and well-coordinated multidisciplinary development in agriculture, science, economics, management, engineering, liberal arts, and law. It is one of the national “211 Project” key universities and also one of the universities under the “985 Advantageous Disciplinary Innovation Platform.” The current university president is Professor Zhou Guanghong.

The origins of Nanjing Agricultural University can be traced back to the Department of Agricultural Botany at Sanjiang Normal School in 1902 and the Department of Agriculture at the private University of Nanking in 1914. In 1952, following a nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, the university was established through the merger of the College of Agriculture from the University of Nanking and the former National Central University (located in Nanjing), along with parts of the College of Agriculture from Zhejiang University. It was then named Nanjing Agricultural College. In 1963, it was designated as one of only two key agricultural universities in the country. In 1972, the school was relocated to Yangzhou, where it merged with Subei Agricultural College to form Jiangsu Agricultural College. In 1979, it moved back to Nanjing and resumed the name Nanjing Agricultural College. In 1984, it was renamed Nanjing Agricultural University. In 2000, it was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Education.

The university comprises 19 colleges and departments, including the College of Agriculture, College of Engineering, College of Plant Protection, College of Resources and Environmental Sciences, College of Horticulture, College of Animal Science and Technology (which includes Wuxi Fisheries College), College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Food Science and Technology, College of Economics and Management, College of Public Administration, College of Humanities and Social Development, College of Life Sciences, College of Science, College of Information Science and Technology, College of Foreign Languages, College of Finance, College of Grassland Science, College of Political Science, and the Department of Physical Education. It offers 62 undergraduate programs, 31 first-level master’s degree programs, 15 types of professional degree authorizations, 16 first-level doctoral degree programs, and 15 postdoctoral research stations. There are over 17,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 8,500 graduate students. The university has a faculty and staff of over 2,700, including 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 27 recipients of national programs such as the Thousand Talents Plan, Changjiang Scholars, and National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 8 national and provincial-level teaching masters, 5 recipients of awards such as National Outstanding Teachers, Model Teachers, and Advanced Workers in the Education System, and over 100 individuals selected for various other national talent programs. The university also has 6 national and provincial-level teaching teams and 3 Ministry of Education innovation teams.
