Founded in 1956, Nanjing Sport Institute is located at the southern foot of Purple Mountain in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing, the ancient capital of ten dynasties. Situated on the site of the former Central Stadium of the Republic of China — once the largest stadium in the Far East — the institute covers an area of over 600 acres. It neighbors the scenic spots of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Linggu Temple, offering a beautiful environment and pleasant scenery.

The institute continues the century-long heritage of modern Chinese sports and is now a provincially-run institution of higher learning with a unique educational model. It cultivates various types of applied sports professionals for society while also nurturing elite athletes for the nation’s competitive sports programs. Currently, the institute has sports teams in 11 events, including badminton, tennis, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, acrobatic gymnastics, fencing, cycling, swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming. Over the past half-century, the institute's sports teams have achieved a series of outstanding results in international and domestic competitions, training and sending a large number of excellent athletes and coaches to the nation. Among them are 15 Olympic champions: women's fencing champion Lan Juje (1984, 23rd Olympic Games in Los Angeles), women's swimming champion Lin Li (1992, 25th Olympic Games in Barcelona), women's badminton champions Ge Fei (1996, 26th Olympic Games in Atlanta & 2000, 27th Olympic Games in Sydney) and Gu Jun (1996, 26th Olympic Games in Atlanta & 2000, 27th Olympic Games in Sydney), men's badminton champion Zhang Jun (2000, 27th Olympic Games in Sydney & 2004, 28th Olympic Games in Athens), men's gymnastics champion Huang Xu (2000, 27th Olympic Games in Sydney & 2008, 29th Olympic Games in Beijing), women's table tennis champion Li Ju (2000, 27th Olympic Games in Sydney), men's table tennis champions Yan Sen (2000, 27th Olympic Games in Sydney) and Chen? (2004, 28th Olympic Games in Athens), women's diving champion Chen Ruolin (2008, 29th Olympic Games in Beijing & 2012, 30th Olympic Games in London), men's trampoline champion Lu Chunlong (2008, 29th Olympic Games in Beijing), men's épée champion Zhong Man (2008, 29th Olympic Games in Beijing), women's épée champions Luo Xiaojuan and Xu Anqi (2012, 30th Olympic Games in London), and men's badminton champion Cai? (2012, 30th Olympic Games in London). In addition, there are 98 world champions and world record holders such as Cai Zhenhua (table tennis), Sun Jinfang (volleyball), and Sun Zhian (badminton), as well as over 100 coaches who have been awarded the National Sports Honor Medal and enjoy special government allowances.
