Nanjing Hilltop Park

Hilltop Park is located in the Toutuo Ridge Scenic Area — on the western side of the main peak of Zhongshan Mountain, which is the second highest peak of Zhongshan, at an elevation of 425 meters. The area features perilous terrain, steep cliffs, and breathtaking scenery. Over the centuries, many emperors, generals, scholars, and poets visited this site in search of tranquility and inspiration, leaving behind numerous precious historical relics.

From the heights, one can enjoy panoramic views of the ancient city of Nanjing and witness its vast transformations through time. The scenic area houses the world-renowned Purple Mountain Observatory, the historic Tianbao City, as well as numerous other attractions including Liu Ji Cave, Qin Qin Stone, Black Dragon Pool, White Cloud Spring, and the largest seated Maitreya Buddha statue in southern China.

Footpaths connect the various scenic spots, making the experience of mountain exploration as easy as walking on flat ground. To facilitate sightseeing, the Zhongshan Mausoleum administration invested in building the Purple Mountain Sightseeing Cableway in 1993, which links the Purple Mountain Observatory and extends directly to the hilltop, becoming one of the new highlights within the Zhongshan Scenic Area.
