Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Memorial Complex
The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Memorial Complex is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangsu Province.
The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Memorial Complex is an important part of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Scenic Area. The core structures of the complex include: the Music Stage, Liuhui Pavilion, Scripture Depository (Main Hall), Guanghua Pavilion, Yangzhi Pavilion, and Zhengqi Pavilion. Before and after the interment of Dr. Sun Yat-sen in the mausoleum, the Nationalist Government successively established the Mausoleum Planning Committee and the Landscape Design Committee, which carefully planned the construction of the mausoleum area and proposed building a series of commemorative structures. By the eve of the War of Resistance against Japan, several memorial buildings had been completed, including the Music Stage, Yangzhi Pavilion, Liuhui Pavilion, Guanghua Pavilion, Scripture Depository, and Zhengqi Pavilion. The Music Stage is located southeast of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum’s Plaza of Universal Benevolence. It was jointly funded by overseas Chinese from San Francisco (formerly known as San Francisco) and the Liaoning Provincial Government, designed by Guan Songsheng and Yang Tingbao, and completed in 1933. The Zhengqi Pavilion is situated on the north side of the Purple Cloud Lake, west of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. It was Chiang Kai-shek’s personally chosen site for his own tomb and was completed in 1947. The Scripture Depository is located along the hiking path east of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, built in the architectural style of a Qing Dynasty Tibetan Buddhist monastery. It was donated by the Buddhist Association of China, designed by Lu Shusen, and completed in 1936. The Liuhui Pavilion is located to the east of the Music Stage and west of Liuhui Lake. It was designed by Gu Wenyu and donated by the Central Military Academy, being completed in 1932. The plaque for “Liuhui Pavilion” was inscribed by Xu Xiangqian, a member of the first class of the Whampoa Military Academy. The Yangzhi Pavilion is located on Meiling Hill, north of the Liuhui Pavilion. It was individually donated, named, and inscribed by Ye Gongchuo, and designed by Liu Dunzhen, being completed in 1932. The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Memorial Complex is an integral part of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Scenic Area, reflecting the respect and reverence of people from all ethnic groups across the nation for Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and holds significant artistic, historical, and social value.
