Site of Dinglin Temple on Zhongshan Mountain
The Site of Dinglin Temple on Zhongshan Mountain is a cultural heritage site protected by Nanjing Municipality.
The Site of Dinglin Temple on Zhongshan Mountain is located in the Zhongshan Scenic Area of Xuanwu District and dates back to the Six Dynasties period.
Dinglin Temple can be divided geographically into Upper Dinglin Temple and Lower Dinglin Temple. Upper Dinglin Temple gained fame for being the place where the renowned literary figure Liu Xie wrote China’s first comprehensive work of literary criticism, The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons.
During the Qi and Liang dynasties of the Southern Dynasties period, the famous literary figure Liu Xie lived at Dinglin Temple on Zhongshan Mountain in the eastern suburbs of Jiankang (present-day Nanjing), the capital at that time, for over 20 years. With access to the temple’s extensive collection of books, he devoted himself to study and research, eventually completing his monumental literary theory work, The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons. A few years ago, memorial institutions related to Liu Xie were established in his ancestral hometown, Juxian County in Shandong Province, and his birthplace, Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province.
In 2005, the management authority organized archaeological research and evaluation work at the Site of Dinglin Temple on Zhongshan Mountain, and initially established the “Liu Xie and The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons Memorial at Dinglin Temple on Zhongshan Mountain,” which has recently been officially opened to the public. The memorial features three exhibition sections—“Zhongshan Mountain and the Six Dynasties Capital,” “Dinglin Temple on Zhongshan Mountain,” and “Liu Xie and The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons”—illustrating the close relationship between Liu Xie, his literary masterpiece, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, Zhongshan Mountain, and Dinglin Temple.
