Du Fu (1611–1687), a poet from the early Qing Dynasty. His original name was Zhaoxian, courtesy name Yu Huang, and literary name Chacun. He was a native of Huanggang (now part of Hubei Province). During the late Ming Dynasty’s Chongzhen era, he was a student at the Imperial College. After the fall of the Ming, he refused to serve the new regime and spent over thirty years living as an expatriate in Jinling (Nanjing), often so impoverished that he could not even afford to light a fire, yet remained unyielding. Known for his proud temperament, he installed a bamboo door at his residence and would lock it from the outside when napping or otherwise occupied—visitors had to wait outside, even high-ranking officials. He once wrote "A Letter to Sun Boren," advising Sun Zhiwei not to serve the Qing court or become a “person split in two.” When the prominent scholar Qian Qianyi came to visit, Du shut the door and refused to meet him.
