The site of the Temple to Martial Deities is located at No. 43 Beijing East Road, Xuanwu District, dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the early Ming Dynasty, the Temple to Martial Deities situated east of today’s Nanjing Municipal Party Committee compound was one of the Ten Temples of the Ming era, dedicated to Guan Yu, the Martial Sage. It was grand in scale and featured majestic halls, including a three-bay Hall of Great Achievement, as well as five-bay corridors on both the eastern and western sides. The elevated terrace was spacious, fronted by the Gate of Great Achievement and three Lingxing Gates, among others. This continued until the Qing army advanced southward, scholars scattered, and the Imperial College was converted into the Jiangning Academy. Later, during the Jiaqing era, the site suffered a devastating fire, and then was ravaged again during the Xianfeng era by warfare. Consequently, in 1867, the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign, the Jiangning Academy was relocated to Yecheng—today’s Chaotian Palace. After over 480 years of existence, featuring thousands of spacious halls and imposing buildings, the Imperial College met misfortune once more. In the eighth year of the Tongzhi reign, 1869, the Temple to Martial Deities was moved back to the eastern part of the compound. According to the "Regional Records of Zhongnan and HuaiBei": “At the eastern foot of the hill (Chicken Cage Hill) there is a Confucius Temple; in the Ming Dynasty it was the Imperial College, in the Qing Dynasty it commemorated the Prefectural School. In the Tongzhi era, the Prefectural School was moved to Yeshan (Yeling), and the site was repurposed as the Temple to Martial Deities.” The Temple to Martial Deities located in the eastern part of today’s Nanjing Municipal Party Committee compound, within the area under the jurisdiction of the Nanjing CPPCC, remains well-preserved.
