Former Residence of the Liu Brothers

The former residence of the Liu brothers is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former residence of the Liu brothers is located on Xiheng Street in Chengjiang Subdistrict. It was the childhood home of the “Three Outstanding Liu Brothers of Jiangyin” — Liu Bannong, a pioneer of the May Fourth New Culture Movement, writer, and linguist; Liu Tianhua, an ethnic musician and founder of the modern erhu school; and Liu Beimao, an ethnic music master, composer, and educator. The building was constructed by the Liu brothers’ great-grandfather in the late Qing Dynasty and has a history of over 150 years. It is a typical late Qing Dynasty residential building in the Jiangnan region, featuring a brick-and-wood structure with a flush gable roof. The residence consists of three bays in two courtyards, with side rooms, three courtyards, and three patios. To this day, relics such as red tropical almond trees, a well, stone drum pedestals, and a soy sauce drying platform remain.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) designated the former residence of the Liu brothers as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Chengjiang Subdistrict: Located in the downtown area of Jiangyin, Chengjiang Subdistrict is the seat of the Jiangyin Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, as well as the city’s political, economic, and cultural center. It covers a total area of 124.3 square kilometers (including the Chengdong New Town Office), governs 49 community committees and 22 village committees, and had a registered population of 229,403 and a migrant population of 108,458 at the end of 2008.
