Wukong Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Wukong Temple is located in Qingyang Town, Jiangyin, and historically was a grand Buddhist monastery. The temple was originally built during the Liang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties and was initially named Zhaoyin Monastery. In the fifth year of the Taiping Xingguo era of the Northern Song Dynasty (980 AD), by imperial decree, Zhaoyin Monastery was renamed Wukong Temple, and Huazang Pagoda was renamed “Wukong Pagoda.” It has a history of over 1,500 years. In October 2003, while villagers were clearing hazardous buildings at the site of an old primary school, they discovered several stone architectural components. Later, through rescue excavations of the pagoda foundation, relics believed to be the remains of the bodhisattva “Sizhou Dashi,” an incarnation of Guanyin, were unearthed. This marked the first discovery of Sangha sarira in China since the uncovering of Buddha's finger relics at Famen Temple and Leifeng Pagoda, making it a significant event since the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In 2004, Wukong Temple was rebuilt, and the Guanyin Culture Expo Park was constructed, aiming to establish it as a premier destination for Buddhist cultural tourism in China.

Traveler’s Tip: At Wukong Temple, you can also visit the Qingyang Town Guanyin Culture Exhibition Hall, which showcases the life of Master Sengqie and promotes Buddhist culture. Additionally, you can try vegetarian dishes at the vegetarian restaurant.

By the Ming and Qing dynasties, thanks to its location along key waterways, Qingyang flourished with a bustling scene described as “thousands of households” and “a convergence of boats and carts,” earning it the nickname “Little Wuxi.”
