The Site of the Jiangsu Provincial Education Commissioner’s Office is located on Renmin Middle Road in the city center. Established in the 42nd year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty (1614), the office operated for 292 years until the abolition of the imperial examination system. A total of 124 education commissioners served here, overseeing candidates from eight prefectures and three sub-prefectures. The office was grand in scale, reputedly “the foremost among official buildings in southern China.” Today, visitors can explore the ceremonial gate, the “Heaven Bestows Literary Fortune” memorial archway, a sculpture group of education commissioners, and the announcement wall where exam results were posted. Standing on these historic grounds, one can easily imagine the grandeur of the provincial examinations (“xiangshi”) in those days.

Chengjiang Subdistrict: Located in the urban core of Jiangyin, Chengjiang Subdistrict is home to the Jiangyin Municipal Committee and Municipal Government, serving as the city’s political, economic, and cultural center. It covers a total area of 124.3 square kilometers (including the Chengdong New Town Office), and governs 49 community committees and 22 village committees. By the end of 2008, it had a registered population of 229,403 and a migrant population of 108,458.
