Huangshan Ancient Fort
The Huangshan Fort is situated within the Huangshan Scenic Area in Jiangyin and is also known as the Jiangyin Fortress. It has been called the "Gateway to the Rivers" and the "Strategic Fortress on the Waterway," serving as a military stronghold since ancient times. Today, it has become a picturesque tourist destination. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, the surging river tides create a spectacular sight, making it one of the famous Eight Scenic Views of Jiangyin — the "Autumn Waves at Huangshan." The largest highway bridge over the Yangtze River, the Jiangyin Changjiang Highway Bridge, also stands here and can be viewed from above.
The site of the Huangshan Fort spans three historical periods: the Ming and Qing dynasties and the Republic of China, covering more than 360 years. Its early construction date, long period of continued use, large scale, and excellent preservation make it a rare example among existing fort ruins in China. The current Huangshan Fort ruins can be divided into Ming-Qing ancient forts, late Qing ancient forts, and Republic of China forts. Among these, the Republic-era forts are the largest in scale and best preserved. They are distributed across various hilltops over several kilometers from east to west. There are six forts on Longtou Mountain, one each on Dongshan and Damantou Mountain, two on E Mountain, two on Jun Mountain, totaling twelve. Additionally, there is a tunnel and an ammunition depot on the top of Xishan, three machine gun bunkers and three ammunition storage rooms from east to west on Longtou Mountain, and one general observation post of the Ximao Peak Fort Command, all of which largely maintain the layout of the fortress command center during the Republic period.
These forts were constructed with reinforced concrete, some carved into stone cliffs, others built along mountain ridges with passageways, featuring deep and uniquely designed underground facilities, some even connected to underground powder magazines. Their structures vary greatly but are all solidly fortified. In addition to the remnants from the three aforementioned periods, there is also a site of a lime-soil ammunition depot under Ximao Peak and remains of three barracks walls.
