Jiangyin Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery

The Jiangyin Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Jiangyin Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is situated at the foot of the scenic Huangshan Mountain, following the natural contours of the land and facing south. It features the Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall and the Crossing-the-Yangtze Campaign Memorial Hall. Construction began in April 1994, and the site was completed and opened in April 1997. It spans 36,300 square meters, with a building area of 2,300 square meters and a green space of 20,000 square meters, representing a cumulative investment of over 15 million yuan. This is a modern architectural complex that blends traditional and contemporary styles — solemn, rustic, majestic, and reverent. From afar, it resembles a warship sailing forth on a campaign, riding the waves and heading towards victory, evoking deep reflection.

Upon entering the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery, the first thing you see is a huge stone surrounded by flowers and green trees, engraved with eight large characters — "Jiangyin Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery" — written by Shen Peng, a renowned calligrapher from Jiangyin. A few steps ahead, a cluster of small green junipers forms the words "Enduring Heroism," setting the tone for the respectful and solemn atmosphere of paying tribute to the martyrs. Just a few meters further stands a wall inscription featuring Chairman Mao Zedong’s handwritten poem “The People’s Liberation Army Captures Nanjing.” To the north of the wall inscription lies a rectangular pool, flanked on both the east and west sides by 55-meter-long relief corridors that display poems and inscriptions about Jiangyin composed by historical figures, written by famous local calligraphers. Ascending the steps, on the east side, you’ll find the 1,100-square-meter Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall, which opened in April 1997. A group sculpture of five martyrs — Jiang Yun, Zhu Songshou, Qian Zhenbiao, Mao Xueqin, and Chen Shuxuan, all delegates to the Sixth National Congress of the Communist Party of China — is remarkably lifelike. The hall displays the heroic deeds of 727 martyrs, with over 300 photos and numerous personal belongings that vividly, powerfully, and movingly portray their stories. On the west side is the 1,100-square-meter Crossing-the-Yangtze Campaign Memorial Hall, which opened in April 1999. It exhibits 165 revolutionary relics and 211 images, providing a detailed and vivid account of the entire campaign. Through modern audiovisual and lighting techniques, it recreates the grand scene of the Million-strong Army Crossing the Yangtze River. Further up the steps, you’ll reach a platform that can accommodate thousands of visitors. At its center stands the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, composed of three sail-shaped structures. The eight large characters on the monument — "Eternal Glory to the Revolutionary Martyrs" — were inscribed by the famous calligrapher Wu Zhongqi, forming the principal symbol of the Jiangyin Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery.

Since its opening, the Jiangyin Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery has consistently upheld the mission of “honoring the martyrs and educating future generations.” It hosts themed educational activities such as oath-taking ceremonies for Party and League members, memorial services, and coming-of-age events. Additionally, leveraging its unique role as a patriotic education base, the cemetery conducts patriotic education in military camps and schools, promotes the Party’s policies, and actively contributes to the advancement of Jiangyin’s three-dimensional civilization.
