The Jiangyin Yangtze River Highway Bridge is China's first extra-large steel box girder suspension bridge with a span exceeding 1,000 meters. It was also the "No. 1 in China, No. 4 in the world" largest steel box girder suspension bridge of the 20th century. It serves as a crucial river-crossing project on the national highway backbone — connecting Tongjiang to Sanya and Beijing to Shanghai. It is the second bridge over the Yangtze River within Jiangsu Province that connects the north and south banks.

The Jiangyin Yangtze River Highway Bridge is located between Shiwu Village in Jingjiang City and Jiangyin City. The total construction length of the bridge is 5.176 kilometers, with a total investment of 3.625 billion yuan. The full length of the bridge is 3,071 meters, with towers standing 197 meters high. The two main cables each have a diameter of 0.870 meters. The bridge deck is designed to six-lane expressway standards, with a width of 33.8 meters, and a designed driving speed of 100 km/h. Additionally, there is a central median strip and emergency parking lanes, with 1.5-meter-wide pedestrian walkways on both sides of the main bridge section over the river.

There are two towers, north and south. The south tower is situated on a rocky foundation on the southern bank. The north tower is located in the shallow water area on the outer side of the northern bank, using a pile foundation constructed via island-building methods. The south anchor is a gravity-type rock-socketed anchorage structure. The north approach spans consist of multi-span prestressed continuous rigid frames. The north and south approach bridges are prestressed concrete girder bridges, with lengths of 132 meters and 1,365 meters respectively. The navigational clearance under the bridge is 50 meters, accommodating the passage of 50,000-ton ships.

The bridge commenced construction on November 22, 1994, and was completed and opened to traffic on September 28, 1999. - [a distinguished figure] inscribed the bridge’s name and officiated the opening ribbon-cutting ceremony.
