Nantong Kite Museum

The Kite Museum is located in the current Municipal Workers' Cultural Palace at No. 1 Huanxi Road.

The museum’s exhibition space is divided into four halls: the first hall — Profound Kite Culture; the second hall — Significant Contributions of Kites; the third hall — Wonderful World of Kites; the fourth hall — Unique Nantong Ban Yao Kites, as well as a kite-making workshop and a film screening room. The museum houses a rich collection of long-established aerial “symphonic instruments” from folklore, including “Weng Sheng,” “Chuo Zi,” “Shao Zi,” and “Hu Long.”

Various musical instruments are on display, along with dozens of traditional paintings, kite-making equipment and tools, all presented with physical objects, photos, and explanatory texts.

The museum mainly showcases kites that have participated in multiple international competitions from the region, as well as award certificates, trophies, and the technical innovations of kite artisans and theoretical research works by kite enthusiasts. It fully highlights the regional, inheritable, innovative, and popular nature of kite culture. Additionally, there is a section dedicated to kites and cultural figures, such as kites and Cao Xueqin, kites and Mei Lanfang, with illustrated brief introductions. There are also classical poems by famous poets throughout history praising the making and flying of kites, presented in calligraphic form, allowing visitors to appreciate the profound depth of Nantong’s kite culture.

In addition to viewing, listening, and touching, the museum also features a small room where visitors who wish to make kites can engage in hands-on crafting.

08:30 – 17:00. Closed on Mondays, but open during holidays.
