Junshan

Junshan Mountain is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Junshan Mountain is located in the Langshan Scenic Area in the southern suburbs of the city. The scenic area consists of five mountains: Langshan, Jaysan, Junshan, Huangnishan, and Ma’anshan. Though not tall, these five mountains are delicate and eye-catching on the flat Jianghai Plain, and with the Yangtze River to the south and mountains and waters in harmony, they present a beautiful and charming scenery.

Junshan Mountain runs from north to south. When it was once an island in the sea, legend has it that it was once a military garrison site of the First Emperor of Qin, and due to its shape resembling a crouching elephant, it is also called Xiangshan (Elephant Mountain).

Introduction

Mountain Gate

This is the usual entrance to Junshan Mountain, hence the name “Mountain Gate.”

The four characters “Dashanmen Ya” (Great Mountain Gate Cliff) on the gate were carved during the Republican era. On the eastern stone wall there is a marking for measuring sea level, while on the western side of the gate, Zhang Jian’s article “Record of the New Road to the Meteorological Observatory” is engraved on the stone. Above Putuo Rock, there used to be a branch hermitage called Yizhi’an, the strategic throat of Junshan Mountain, with the mountain path passing right in front of it.

East of the Mountain Gate:

To the east of Putuo Rock are the Large and Small Camellia Bays, with the large bay to the east and the small one to the west.

To the left (west) of Putuo Rock is Lion Cave. This rock cave is steep with a hollow in the middle, and grotesque rocks jutting out on both sides like crouching lions, hence the name Lion Cave. There used to be a Shui Guan Hermitage here. Further west and uphill, there used to be a Floating Cup Hermitage.

Dozens of steps south of Lion Cave at the southeastern foot of Junshan Mountain lies Chuanfeng Cave, which is lofty, open, and shaped like two gates. One can enter from the south and exit to the west; it is also known as Shimen Cave (Stone Gate Cave).

West of the Mountain Gate:

Slightly westward from Putuo Rock and then turning eastward is Liulang Road, built in the 12th year of the Qianlong reign (1748) by Liu Mingfang.

Along the mountain path east of Liulang Road, there is an inscribed stone bearing the three characters “Liulang Road,” along with an inscription by Zhang Ting? reading: “This road was opened by Liu Nanlu from Minzhong. Zhe Dong’s Fengling Shanren passed by and recorded it so that those who come in the future may not lose their way.”

Along the route west of Putuo Rock, there is also the Luohan Temple, originally built on the site of the Ming-era Xijing’an Hermitage. It was renovated in the Qianlong era and renamed Luohan Temple. It was advocated for repair by monk Shoushan in the 8th year of Qianlong’s reign. The resident monk was the renowned Junshan monk Yuhuan.

Tip: There are three paths to the mountaintop from Liulang Road: one goes up from Liulang Road via Putuo Rock, turns east at Xiangbiyan (Elephant Trunk Rock), and then leads to the top; another goes from Baiyun Spring to the top; the third goes westward from Putuo Rock and is comparatively steeper.
