Nantong Chenghuang Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Nantong City.

Nantong Chenghuang Temple, No. 199 Hao dong Road. Originally built in the second year of the Jianlong era during the Song Dynasty (961 AD) by local official Wang Mao, it is also known as the Prefectural Temple or County Temple. It was initially located southeast of the state office at the crossroads in the city center and has undergone numerous renovations over the past thousand years, remaining prosperous throughout. In 1998, the temple was relocated to the northern end of Hao Dong Green Park by the Hao River, with the ceremonial gate, passageway, worship hall, main hall, as well as the Hall of the Thirty-Six Gods, the Hall of the God of Wealth, and the east and west side halls all reconstructed to their original designs.

Later additions include the mountain gate, theater stage, rear palace, Wenchang Pavilion, Yaowang Pavilion, front and rear east and west wing rooms, side rooms, and east and west corridors, covering nearly ten acres. The building area is 2,248 square meters, all constructed with brick and wood, featuring simple tiled roofs in an antique style; the layout is rigorous, with landscaped gardens inside, resembling the scenery of a traditional Jiangnan garden.

The garden features distinctive hollowed-out walls that frame views of the Hao River, with cast iron seal script windows inscribed with moral teachings. The temple takes the river as its scenic backdrop, while the river enhances the temple’s charm. The west corridor displays statues of eighteen upright officials from Yan Ying of the Warring States period to Lin Zexu of the Qing Dynasty, while the east corridor features a stele corridor of Taoist maxims through the ages.
