Duolun Road Cultural Celebrities Street

Duolun Road Cultural Celebrities Street is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Duolun Road (formerly known as Doule'an Road) is a small street just 550 meters long at the northern end of Sichuan North Road in Hongkou. In the past, the literary activities of writers such as Lu Xun established Duolun Road’s historical status as a “hub of modern literature.” Today, the area is dotted with museums, art galleries, exhibition centers, bookstores, literary cafés, tea houses, bars, and antique and calligraphy shops, making it a great destination for both domestic and international visitors to reminisce, relax, sightsee, and enjoy cultural experiences.

Adjacent to Lu Xun Park, Duolun Road is an L-shaped lane over 500 meters long. Along the way, you’ll find retro small Western-style buildings with red or gray bricks and statues of historical figures, making it perfect for photography and strolling. Many literary giants, including Lu Xun, Mao Dun, and Guo Moruo, once lived here. Nowadays, there are numerous art galleries where you can soak up a rich cultural atmosphere.

Entering this cultural street from the end of the “L,” the first thing you’ll see is the Duolun Museum of Modern Art. Further ahead stands a Christian church, the Hongde Hall, which once housed many expatriates and returned overseas-educated individuals. Going on, you’ll find a yellow-walled modern-style building next to an old bookstore—this was once the residence of the Japanese Navy military attaché.

At the corner stands a four-story clock tower called the “Xishi Bell Tower.” A few steps away, you’ll see the entrance to a lane named “Jingyun Li,” where a group of Left-Wing League writers once lived, including Qu Qiubai, Chen Wangdao, Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, Feng Xuefeng, Ye Shengtao, and Mao Dun. At No. 2, Lane 21, there remains the former site and memorial hall of the Left-Wing League, once a gathering place for cultural luminaries.

Duolun Road is also home to many quaint cafés and small private collectors’ museums, such as the Shanghai Newspaper Museum, the Shanghai Folk Nanjing Clock Collection Museum, and the Shanghai Duolun Area Haipai Culture Museum. Additionally, you can visit the Shanghai Cultural Relics Store’s art exhibition hall.

After exploring Duolun Road, you can also visit another distinctive lane—Tian’ai Road, which is just 150 meters east along Sichuan North Road from the northern end of Duolun Road.

Take Metro Line 3 to Dongbaoxing Road Station, cross the opposite Hongbang Road to reach Duolun Road; or take Metro Line 4 to Hailun Road Station, Exit 1, walk along Donghongbang Road to get there. Alternatively, take Bus 18, 21, 52, 167, 318, 854, or 939 to Sichuan North Road Hongbangqiao Station; Bus 70 or 97 to Sichuan North Road Duolun Road Station; or Bus 18, 21, 47, 52, 167, 318, 597, 854, 939, or 962 to Sichuan North Road Shan Yin Road Station.
