Huang Jiguang Square serves as a patriotic education base.

Jiguang High School is a patriotic education base in Hongkou District. With a 112-year history, the school boasts a rich campus culture. Named after the Korean War hero Huang Jiguang, the school is also called Huang Jiguang Square because of the statue of Huang Jiguang erected in its beautiful campus. Over the years, Jiguang High School has carried out a variety of colorful patriotic education activities at Huang Jiguang Square. For example, every year during the Qingming Festival, the school holds a “Qingming Memorial” themed educational event where students look back at history and look forward to the future. Huang Jiguang was born in 1931 into a poor farming family in Zhongjiang County, Sichuan Province. At the age of 11, after his father passed away, he had to work for a landlord to support his family. During the day, he herded cattle, cut grass, and carried water, and at night he served the landlord, suffering from exploitation and oppression. Despite working hard all year round, he lived in poverty without enough food or warm clothing, which bred deep resentment toward the old society. After the liberation of Zhongjiang County, he joined the Peasant Association and the militia, actively working for the Party.
