Shanghai Municipal Archives

The Shanghai Municipal Archives is a cultural tourism attraction and a patriotic education base.

The Shanghai Municipal Archives was established on December 31, 1959, and houses a collection of 3 million volumes (items) of archives, preserving a relatively complete memory of Shanghai’s urban history and serving as a vivid resource for patriotic education. On April 23, 2004, the Bund New Hall of the Shanghai Municipal Archives opened to the public in the Bund scenic area.

The Bund New Hall of the Shanghai Municipal Archives serves as a centralized information access center for government disclosures and archival resources, a showcase window for the city’s development history, an activity base for party and youth league organizations, a second classroom for minors’ ideological and moral development, and a leisure venue for citizens to enjoy archival culture. The first and second floors house the permanent thematic exhibition hall "Urban Memory – Exhibition on the Development of Shanghai’s Modern History." The third and fourth floors are dedicated to special exhibition halls, primarily hosting thematic exhibitions aligned with the central work of the Party and government as well as various social events, while also attracting outstanding exhibitions of distinctive character from home and abroad. The fifth floor is the archival document and information utilization service center, providing multi-faceted access services for archival documents and government disclosures. The sixth floor features an electronic reading room with digital archive and image viewing halls, offering video and photo on-demand services. Floors seven to ten are equipped with classrooms, meeting rooms, multimedia audio-visual rooms, lecture halls, and other facilities of various sizes and functions.

Leveraging its precious collections and focusing on social hot topics, the Shanghai Municipal Archives regularly hosts various thematic exhibitions and lectures, providing a platform for all sectors of society to learn historical knowledge, promote revolutionary traditions, and cultivate moral integrity. The public can explore the development footprints of Shanghai and revisit the city’s memory here.
