The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, as well as a science education base and a patriotic education base.

The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center is located on the eastern side of People's Square, covering an area of 3,600 square meters with a total construction area of over 20,000 square meters, of which nearly 7,000 square meters are exhibition space. It is a specialized venue showcasing Shanghai’s urban planning and development achievements, and also one of the city’s iconic buildings. The center is themed around “City, People, Environment, and Development,” and presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of the past, present, and future of Shanghai—this international metropolis—as it has evolved in form and function.

The center includes five functional floors, a film and conference hall, and an Old Shanghai-style street. The lobby exhibition is themed “Monument of History,” the mezzanine hosts the Historical and Cultural City Hall, reflecting Shanghai’s journey from a fishing village on the East China Sea to a modern metropolis. The second floor is for temporary exhibitions. The third floor is the Master Plan Hall I, which highlights Shanghai’s overall urban planning, featuring a massive model at a 1:500 scale covering nearly 600 square meters, as well as a 360-degree panoramic virtual exhibition hall called the “Magical Shanghai Journey.” The fourth floor is the Master Plan Hall II, mainly displaying key infrastructure projects and specialized plans. The basement level is the “Shanghai – 1930 Style Street,” showcasing the unique architectural style of Shanghai in the 1930s.

After 10 years of development, the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center has gradually become an important promotional window for showcasing Shanghai’s urban development and future planning. It has achieved its goal of helping visitors “understand Shanghai starting from the Planning Exhibition Center,” established the service philosophy of “Serving the public with heart, and serving society with passion,” and taken on the role of a “city parlor” to receive important domestic and international dignitaries. In addition to fixed thematic exhibitions, the center also offers professional meeting spaces, facilities, and services, along with modern temporary exhibition areas, making it a platform for cultural, technological, and commercial display and exchange.

Its main features:

1. Virtual Reality: The first high-tech virtual film experience available to visitors in China.

2. Holographic Imaging: A 14-meter-long holographic imaging system titled “Nanjing Road: Then and Now,” depicting the historical and cultural landscape of China’s premier commercial street. It is the longest holographic imaging system in China.

3. Information Harbor: The Shanghai Information Harbor showcases the latest developments in information technology in areas such as e-commerce, industrial design, urban management, distance education, medical revolution, and smart homes. Through high-tech methods such as virtual reality, digital films, and surface acoustic wave touchscreens, it presents the boundless charm of future networked society.

4. Urban Planning Large Model: A city planning model spanning over 600 square meters realistically depicts all buildings over six stories within the Inner Ring Road. This model is the largest urban planning model in the world. It displays the urban planning blueprint for the city up to the year 2020, setting a Guinness World Record.

Highlights: Old photo exhibition, “Yu Garden” scene demonstration, large model of Shanghai’s central urban core area, 360-degree circular screen theater, Yangshan Deep Water Port exhibit where you can pilot a virtual yacht, gliding over the blue sea or speeding across the majestic Donghai Bridge to experience the charm of Yangshan Deep Water Port, and the “Shanghai 1930” style street.
