The Shanghai Grand Theatre is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a patriotic education base.

The Shanghai Grand Theatre is located in People's Square and was designed by the French architecture firm Jean-Marie Charpentier. The entire building resembles a crystal palace woven from musical notes and officially opened on August 27, 1998. By the end of 2009, the theatre had hosted a cumulative total of 6,000 performances, attracting over 10 million audience members. It has now become a world-class platform for showcasing artistic works, an international hub for artistic exchange, and a public platform for promoting arts education.

Covering an area of 2.1 hectares, the Shanghai Grand Theatre has a total floor space of 70,000 square meters and a height of 40 meters. It houses three theatres of varying sizes (with 1,800, 600, and 300 seats respectively). The theatre is equipped with top-tier sound and lighting systems from renowned global manufacturers. Its stage spans a total area of 1,700 square meters and consists of a main stage, rear stage, and two side stages, featuring one of the world’s most advanced fully automated mechanical stages. The theatre also boasts comprehensive supporting facilities, including the Stargazing Banquet Hall, Maxim’s Western Restaurant, a ticketing center, and a large parking garage. Its management has been certified under the ISO9001:2008 International Quality Management System.

From 2000 to 2009, the Shanghai Grand Theatre was named a Shanghai Civilized Unit for five consecutive terms. In 2004, it was designated as a “National Cultural Industry Demonstration Base.” In October 2005, it was awarded the honorary title of “National Advanced Collective in Cultural Work,” and in 2006, it won the “China Golden Award for Best Theatre Management.” In 2008, it was recognized as a “Shanghai Base for International Cultural Exchange.” In 2000, the theatre joined the Asia-Pacific Performing Arts Centres Alliance (AAPPAC) and became one of its executive committee members.
