Guide Shanghai Concert Hall was built in 1930, originally named the Nanking Theatre. It was renamed Beijing Cinema in 1949, and then became Shanghai Concert Hall in 1959, a name it retains to this day. Introduction Shanghai Concert Hall is an architectural work designed by Fan Wenzhao and Zhao Chen, two leading figures among China’s first generation of modern architects. It is also the oldest surviving European classical-style music venue in Shanghai designed by Chinese architects. The hall is renowned for its outstanding acoustics, highly praised by all musicians who have performed here. For over a decade, it has been the main venue for the “Shanghai Spring” International Music Festival, making it the top choice for enjoying and performing classical music in Shanghai.

Shanghai Concert Hall has a total of 1,243 seats. The proscenium stage is 8.35 meters deep and 16 meters wide, with a usable area of about 100 square meters. The building is a rare example of traditional European style in Shanghai. As soon as you enter the lobby, you are greeted by sixteen majestic cylindrical columns made of sienna marble. The layout of the auditorium is clear, well-defined, intricate yet uncluttered, dynamic yet layered. The colors are understated and dignified. Its exceptional natural acoustics have earned recognition from architectural experts and many Chinese and international artists.

Famous violinists such as Isaac Stern, Uto Ughi, and Pinchas Zukerman, pianists including Martha Argerich, Fou Ts’ong, and Yin Chengzong, as well as the Philadelphia Orchestra Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and China Symphony Orchestra have all performed here to great acclaim.
