People's Square, Shanghai

People's Square in Shanghai is located in Huangpu District. It took shape after the city's opening as a port, and was originally known as the Shanghai Racecourse, a venue where the upper class held horse racing and other events. In a broad sense, People's Square mainly consists of an open square, People's Park, and surrounding cultural, tourism, and commercial buildings. People's Square is Shanghai’s economic, political, and cultural center, a transportation hub, a tourist destination, and also one of the city’s most important landmarks. Covering a total area of 140,000 square meters in central Shanghai, it was once a gathering place for the public that could accommodate over 1.2 million people. Against the backdrop of reform and opening-up, the redevelopment of People's Square became a historical necessity. The comprehensive renovation project of People's Square commenced with the construction of the subway station in May 1988. After more than six years of work, it unveiled its new look on the eve of the 45th National Day. The revamped People's Square has become a cross-century political and cultural center that integrates culture, greenery, and aesthetics.

Transportation

People's Square is a major transportation hub in Shanghai, with many public transport routes starting here. Metro Lines 1, 2, and 8 all pass through this location and have a station named People's Square.

At the People's Square Station of Metro Lines 1, 2, and 8, along Wusheng Road from west to east, the terminal stops for bus lines 123, 503, 925, 112, 46, 916, Tunnel 6, 574, 581, 201, 203, 531, 145, and 934 are located. On Tibet Road, you can find bus stops for lines 18, 108, 217, 518, 537, 573, 584, 802, 930, 980, and Tunnel 3. On Yan’an Road, stops are available for lines 71, 127, 202, 775, 789, 831, 935, 936, Tunnel 4, and Tunnel 5. In front of the Shanghai Museum, you’ll find stops for lines 49 and the Jinjiang Sightseeing Bus. On North Huangpi Road, stops are provided for lines 23 and 109, while on Fuzhou Road, lines 17 and 864 stop here.
