San Shan Guild Hall (Workers' Patrol Shanghai Southern Headquarters)

San Shan Guild Hall (Workers' Patrol Shanghai Southern Headquarters) is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai and a base for patriotic education.

Established in the first year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1909), San Shan Guild Hall was funded and built by fruit merchants from Fujian residing in Shanghai. It was used by the trade for business discussions and the worship of the Heavenly Queen. The name “San Shan” originates from the old Yuewang Mountain, Jiuxian Mountain, and Min Mountain in Fuzhou.

San Shan Guild Hall is the only well-preserved late Qing guild hall building in Shanghai that remains open to the public, as well as the only surviving site from the third armed uprising of Shanghai workers. The entire guild hall complex covers an area of 1,000 square meters, featuring elaborate carvings and paintings, exquisite beauty, and significant artistic value. After the liberation, the guild hall was once used as school premises. In 1986, due to municipal construction, it was relocated 30 meters south and rebuilt. In 2008, the municipal and district governments allocated special funds to carry out the largest-scale preservation project in the guild hall’s history, restoring the brick-carved gatehouse and recasting the marble statue of the Heavenly Queen in the main hall, bringing back its former glory.

San Shan Guild Hall is a witness to social development. Shanghai once had over 400 guild halls and public associations over a span of more than three centuries. On the occasion of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the Shanghai Guild Hall History Exhibition Hall was newly built next to the original site of San Shan Guild Hall. It systematically showcases the role of guilds and public associations in Shanghai’s economic development and the formation of an immigrant city through precious historical relics, documents, and exhibits. The exhibition also includes displays on the three armed uprisings of Shanghai workers and a photo-documentary exhibition titled “Inside and Outside the City — The New Look of Old Huangpu.”

San Shan Guild Hall was listed as a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai in 1959, and after relocation and reconstruction, it opened to the public in October 1989. It is now a patriotic education base of Shanghai, a national defense education base for all citizens, a red tourism base of Shanghai, and a cultural exhibition hall for the 2010 World Expo.
