Shanghai Penglai Park

Built in 1954, Penglai Park houses a large collection of animal stone carvings from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The park has created a “Lion Path,” displaying all the collected stone lions along both sides of the walkway. It is reported that these Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasty animal stone carvings were gathered in the 1970s by several veteran employees of the park from rural areas in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, at almost no cost. There are over 70 pieces in total, including stone lions, stone tigers, stone sheep, and stone elephants. Most of them were originally gate-guarding lions of wealthy households or tomb-guarding stone animals. Among them, two pairs of lions and one stone kylin are noted for their simple yet rustic craftsmanship and have been authenticated by experts as Yuan dynasty stone carvings.
