Shanghai Ancient City Park is a cultural tourism attraction.

Ancient City Park is located between Renmin Road, Anren Street, and Fuyou Road, with a total green space of nearly 40,000 square meters. The greening construction project started on February 10, 2002, and was finished on May 31 of the same year, lasting 110 days. The park’s design highlights the principle of “three priorities and five considerations.” It focuses on greenery, people, and ecology; while also considering the reflection of the ancient city’s historical culture, the dispersal of pedestrian traffic, establishing an educational base to raise public awareness of risks, showcasing the park’s iconic landscape, and reconfiguring tourism resources.

The overall landscape of the park is characterized by modern urban public open space design, forming a large-scale public area that balances with the surrounding urban architecture and spatial scale. The main visual axis extends from Xin Kai River toward Yu Garden, creating a dialogue between Shanghai’s future (Lujiazui) and past (Yu Garden). The curved ramp from the sunken plaza to Danfeng Terrace gradually ascends, as if tracing the path of history and narrating “the story of the city wall.”

Along Renmin Road, there is a vast lawn and meandering stream that evoke the old city’s moat, creating an urban scene rich in unique historical and cultural significance. Along Fuyou Road and Anren Street, dense woodlands serve both as a buffer and transition between the old city’s urban fabric and modern space, while also recreating the classical charm of the “Qianye Guild Hall” within the forest—evoking memories of the past and providing a sense of historical distance. Danfeng Terrace, the highest point in the park, offers visitors the experience of standing where the historical Danfeng Tower once stood, allowing them to appreciate the value of Shanghai’s historical and cultural heritage from various perspectives.

Plant arrangements follow ecological principles, creating a layered and well-structured landscape space. Native tree species and large canopy trees are the main vegetation, including osmanthus, zelkova, ginkgo, wingnut, small-leaved podocarpus, magnolia, and crape myrtle.

The completion of Ancient City Park has not only improved the ecological environment of the old city area and enriched the urban landscape but also enhanced the quality of life for residents nearby, moving the old city toward becoming a garden-style ecological urban district in the 21st century.
