Tianzifang is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The name Tianzifang was actually an elegant title given to this old alleyway a few years ago by the painter Huang Yongyu, but it added an artistic touch to what were once small street factories, abandoned warehouses in the lanes, and ordinary homes in the Shikumen alleyways. Tianzifang is a fashionable, landmark creative industry hub transformed from Shanghai’s unique Shikumen architectural complexes, and also the creative workplace base for many artists. People often refer to Tianzifang as the “Second Xintiandi.” In reality, aside from sharing a similar fashion sense, it differs in many ways from Xintiandi. There are now over 40 art and craft shops and more than 20 studios and design offices stationed along Taikang Road. The government provides the stage, while enterprises take the lead. Tianzifang is the street emblem of Shanghai’s Taikang Road Art Street—the flowing ribbon above the sculpture symbolizes the connection between artists from the five continents and four oceans. Tianzifang presents to people a more approachable, warm, and bustling side of Shanghai. As long as you stroll through this lane, now the most atmospheric in Shanghai, you’ll easily grasp Tianzifang’s distinctive character. Walking around Tianzifang, winding through its maze-like alleys, specialty shops and art workshops catch your eye when you least expect them. From teahouses, open-air restaurants, outdoor cafés, galleries, home décor, to handicrafts, as well as numerous well-known creative studios in Shanghai, you’ll find just about everything.
