The Jiangnan Shipyard Museum is a science education base and a patriotic education base.

The Jiangnan Shipyard Museum is a microcosm of China's modern and contemporary scientific and technological history, as well as its industrial history. Located on the second and third floors of the Jiangnan Shipyard Building at 600 Luban Road, Luwan District, Shanghai, near the Lupu Bridge. It was formerly the Jiangnan Shipyard History Museum and serves as a Shanghai Patriotic Education Base and a Shanghai Science Education Base.

To vividly and intuitively demonstrate the power of technological development, the Jiangnan Shipyard Museum has designed over twenty ship models, an operational submarine command center diorama, an electric model of a 10,000-ton hydraulic press, photoelectric sand tables, and other visual displays showcasing advancements in various fields of technology, aiming to achieve effective educational outcomes. The exhibition layout allows ample room for future improvements.

Within the 1,800-square-meter Jiangnan Shipyard Museum, 459 historical photographs, 77 physical objects, and 21 ship models showcase some representative products from different historical periods of "Jiangnan" since 1865, bringing together nearly all types of vessels in China: China’s first submarine, the first 10,000-ton hydraulic press, the first cross-sea train ferry, the first independently designed and built 10,000-ton ship, the first liquefied petroleum gas carrier, and the warship used by the Chinese Navy on its first global voyage; as well as the appearance of China’s first motorized warship, first artillery piece, and first breech-loading rifled gun.

Established in 1865, the Jiangnan Machinery Manufacturing Bureau was the birthplace of China’s modern industry, the cradle of China’s industrial workforce, and a key military-industrial stronghold in resisting imperialist invasion. At the same time, Jiangnan was also one of China’s earliest testing grounds for opening up to the world and learning and spreading Western science and technology.

Currently, 11 historical buildings and sites that witnessed the development of China’s industrial civilization are still preserved at the original Jiangnan site, including the former site of the Translation Hall, the former shipyard dock, aircraft hangars, buildings from the Japanese occupation period, and the former site of the Navy Command Headquarters.

The Jiangnan Shipyard Museum is divided into five exhibition areas: the History Hall, Civilian Ships Hall, Military Ships Hall, Heavy Industry Hall, and Jiangnan Changxing Hall. Among them, the Heavy Industry Hall features steel structure products built by Jiangnan Heavy Industry Company, a listed company under the Jiangnan Shipyard Group. It showcases iconic structures such as the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Shanghai Grand Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts, as well as the maglev train tracks and the Lupu Bridge—the world’s largest steel arch bridge. These exhibits highlight Jiangnan’s contributions to key projects in Shanghai and across the nation, demonstrating the enterprise’s competitiveness in non-ship product markets.
