Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai

The Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai is located in People’s Park in the city center, adjacent to the Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Art Museum, and Shanghai Museum. The museum has two floors and, although not large in size, regularly hosts numerous exhibitions. In addition to purely artistic exhibitions, it also features brand and design shows that appeal to the general public.

The original site of the museum was a greenhouse in People’s Park. During the construction process, the external glass walls were preserved, while the interior underwent extensive redevelopment. The venue retains its excellent natural lighting and outstanding views of the park, while also meeting professional museum standards through the addition of multiple facilities. The total area of the museum is 4,000 square meters; the exhibition areas on the first and second floors cover nearly 1,800 square meters in total, all equipped with professional temperature and humidity control systems.

Administrative areas include meeting rooms, a multi-function hall, VIP rooms, and an information and resource center. Public service areas consist of a customer service desk, the museum gift shop, and a restaurant offering delicious cuisine with great views.

A striking feature is a 50-meter-long crescent-shaped illuminated ramp set within a 1,000-square-meter space, offering visitors a completely new visual experience when exploring the exhibitions.

Gallery 2 represents a fusion of indoor space and outdoor environment. Within this 800-square-meter open area, visitors can take in the ramp and the museum’s crystal-like glass structure in full.

The museum was established with funding from the Gong Mingguang Foundation and approved by the Shanghai Municipal Government as a non-profit, independently operated art institution dedicated to promoting contemporary art from China and around the world. Managed by a team with extensive curatorial and administrative experience, the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai aims to cultivate appreciation for contemporary art and design from China and abroad, and continuously promote cultural exchange between Shanghai and the rest of the world.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai is a people-oriented institution. Situated in People’s Park—a place of special historical significance to the citizens of Shanghai—the museum also carries the responsibility of introducing art to the general public. It welcomes international visitors and looks forward to engaging with local audiences from various sectors, including business, culture, and education.

Since its opening in the autumn of 2005, the exhibitions held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai have received widespread international acclaim. In September 2006, the museum launched its first documenta exhibition, “Enter: Chinese Aesthetics.”
