The development of ancient Chinese furniture has a long and rich history. The Ming and Qing dynasties marked the golden age of traditional Chinese furniture craftsmanship. Although Ming and Qing furniture differ greatly in style, their artistic achievements have been widely praised. Stepping into the Ming and Qing Furniture Museum of China is like entering the garden estates of the Ming and Qing periods, with its blue-brick walls, white plaster, and swaying bamboo, exuding an air of refined elegance. The museum’s 700-square-meter exhibition hall displays over 100 pieces of the finest Ming and Qing furniture in China. Among them are Ming-style furniture known for its simple forms, smooth lines, balanced proportions, and precise mortise-and-tenon joints; and Qing-style furniture characterized by generous use of materials, stately forms, elaborate ornamentation, and a richly ornate, luxurious appearance. To recreate the usage context of ancient furniture, the museum has also restored Ming and Qing-style halls and studies.
