Yanzhong Park

Shanghai’s Yanzhong Park was originally named the Large Public Green Space on Middle Yan’an Road. It is a key municipal project and a major initiative by the city government to improve Shanghai’s ecological environment and alleviate the “heat island effect” in the city center. The planned green space covers a total area of 230,000 square meters, consisting of 17 plots spread across Huangpu, Luwan, and Jing’an districts. The overall landscape planning was designed by the world-renowned Williams Asselin Askaoui Landscape Architects and Urban Planners from Montreal, Canada, with detailed construction drawings prepared by the Shanghai Landscape Architecture Design Institute.

Yanzhong Park is divided into Phase I and Phase II based on their construction timelines. Phase I is located in Huangpu District, stretching west from North Chengdu Road, east to Danshui Road, south from East Jinling Road, and north to Middle Yan’an Road, covering a total area of 37,355 square meters. Phase II of Yanzhong Park has a site area of 80,000 square meters. Its landscape design incorporates modern horticultural techniques, emphasizing nature and plant materials, complemented by features such as water bodies, peninsulas, bridges, platforms, and pavilions, creating an immersive experience that brings visitors close to nature.

The park features water bodies totaling 6,800 square meters, divided into two sections by Huangpi Road, with depths of about 1–1.5 meters. In the eastern section, ducks swim on the water surface while red carp splash around; a central fountain shoots water high into the air like a flag fluttering in the wind. The western part showcases a cascading water feature, where water flows down from a higher level and is then pumped back up artificially to ensure a continuous circulation of fresh, flowing water. Visitors can step onto small islands in the water, immerse themselves in its embrace, or sit on viewing platforms overlooking the water to enjoy a symphony of blue and green. They can also walk barefoot across wooden bridges and watch the murmuring stream flow beneath their feet—the lowest point is just 20 centimeters above the bridge.

To accommodate visitors, the park is equipped with rest facilities such as pavilions and benches, along with six large tree-plaza areas that serve not only as resting and sightseeing spots but also as ideal places for morning exercise.
