Shanghai Sipailou

The origin of “Sipailou” is related to the earliest Confucian temple in Shanghai. The original Confucian temple was located in what is now the area around Sipailou Road (Pailou Road), Xueyuan Road. During the Small Swords Society Uprising in Shanghai, the buildings of the Confucian temple were almost completely destroyed and leveled to the ground. Because there were once four archways here, it came to be called “Sipailou Street.” Sipailou Road has preserved the old look of a commoners' street in the old city, and today, influenced by the commercial wave, Sipailou has become a street known for its specialty snacks.

It’s a bit like a residential area—quiet—and not far away is the Bund.
