Longmen Village

Longmen Village is home to many old Shanghai buildings. In 1935, this plot of land was divided into 53 sections for sale. The buyers came from diverse backgrounds, which is why every building in Longmen Village is unique. Strolling through the alleyways, you might see a Spanish-style house on your left and a Scottish-style one on your right; one moment your eyes are resting on a building in classic Baroque style, and the next you're faced with modern Art Deco.

Back in the day, even before the liberation, a single house in Longmen Village would have set you back the price of three gold bars. It’s a pity that, located deep within narrow lanes, it never developed like the Shikumen buildings in Xintiandi. But precisely because of this, the area is quiet and less crowded, perfect for in-depth exploration where you can discover many delightful surprises.
