Site of the International Opium Commission

On February 1, 1909, delegates from 13 countries including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany gathered at the Hui Zhong Hotel (now the Peace Hotel) to convene the International Opium Commission. At that time, opium use was rampant in old Shanghai. From February 1 to 26, 1909, the "International Opium Commission" held 14 meetings at the Hui Zhong Hotel, ultimately adopting nine resolutions on the suppression of narcotics. At the International Opium Commission, Governor-General of Liangjiang Duanfang, representing China, urged other countries to assist the Chinese government in implementing anti-opium measures.

Time flies. Eighty-seven years later, on November 25, 1996, a commemorative plaque inscribed with "Site of the International Opium Commission" was unveiled at the South Building of the Peace Hotel. Drug control experts and officials attending the "Shanghai International Conference on Narcotic Drugs" witnessed this moment. Now, everyone who walks past the entrance of the South Building of the Peace Hotel can see this commemorative plaque.
