Former Site of the China Merchants Steam Navigation Company
The China Merchants Steam Navigation Company was initiated in 1872 when Li Hongzhang, the Viceroy of Zhili, invited Zhu Qicang, an experienced maritime shipping expert, to discuss establishing a modern shipping enterprise. In January 1873, the company was officially founded in Shanghai under the principle of official supervision and merchant management, with shares raised from merchants.
It was the first enterprise during the Self-Strengthening Movement to transition from military production to also managing civilian ventures, and from being state-run to state-supervised and merchant-operated. It is the predecessor of the China Merchants Group and the founder of China Merchants Bank.
